The Forest and Afar

Ron Powell was born in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. He begins with stories of his life and adventures as a child in the Forest, then recounts his experiences in HM Royal Marines — as part of the Pacific Fleet during World War 2, where he just escaped with his life during a kamikaze attack, as a bandsman playing during events such the Coronation of Elizabeth II, and post-war in New Zealand where met and married the love of his life — "I knew as soon as I saw her that I was going to marry her, even though we hadn't met". He tells of his service during the infamous 1950s New Zealand waterfront strikes; learning to live the Kiwi dream in Stratford, Taranaki, including blowing up the town clock; his involvement in New Zealand prisons — including riots and infamous inmates; and life and adventures in his "nirvana", New Zealand.
